My name is Dr. Emily M. Matson and I currently teach as a Professorial Lecturer in the George Washington University's Elliott School of International Affairs and an Adjunct Lecturer in Georgetown University's Department of History. I am a passionate historian and educator, and have designed and taught a variety of courses in modern East Asian History at Georgetown University, American University, the College of William and Mary, and Randolph College. 

My first book, China's "Date Debate": How Manchurian Scholars Rewrote World War II, will be published in June 2026 with the University of Michigan Press, China Understandings Today series. Preorder your own copy today!  

I am also a Stephen M. Kellen term member on the Council on Foreign Relations, a non-resident fellow for the University of Pennsylvania Penn Project on the Future of U.S.-China Relations, and a research affiliate at the University of Virginia's East Asia Center. My research interests include Northeastern China (东北), historical memory, museums, and World War II.
